About Us
Credit Unions are owned and operated by the people it serves which is one of the many reasons a Credit Union is different from any other financial institution. Our Credit Union was formed by a group of people, employees of the Pittsburgh& Lake Erie Railroad, who wanted to control their own financial destiny. This handful of people-members-not-customers, provided the initial capital to start this Credit Union.
The Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Employees Federal Credit Union was chartered on October 11, 1941. On October 23, 1941, the Credit Union was organized by a group of employees of the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad and these people pooled their money as savings along with monies from new members and made low cost loans to each other.
On March 18, 1982, our Credit Union took in another – the first merger in the United States. Since that date we have had 12 mergers and have accepted employees from many other companies within the Pittsburgh area into our Credit Union. Because of this action, we were forced to change our name. The Credit Union name was officially changed from Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Employees Federal Credit Union to Little Giant Federal
